The written Spelling bee will take place in December prior to winter break, so that the students who are moving on to the oral round can have time to practice and study over break. By design, there is no practice before hand. We like to invite any 4th or 5th grader to compete and excel at spelling, if that's their thing!

For the oral round, the elementary spellers and the middle school spellers combine for a district oral round. The 1st place speller will represent Platte Valley at the Colorado State Spelling Bee in Denver in March. The spellers in 1st through 7th places are invited to the Northern Plains Middle Level Association Spelling Bee. Traditionally, this has been more of an exhibition than a competition for state qualification. State spellers have already been determined at each school district's oral spelling bee held before the NPMLA bee.
